My journey into marketing didn’t happen overnight. Fresh out of high school at just 18 years old, life handed me an unexpected challenge and opportunity: after my dad passed away, I was practically entrusted with taking over and running his printing business. It was a huge responsibility — one that pushed me into the world of office and administrative work far earlier than most, with a deep focus on print production.

I became well-versed in the nuts and bolts of bringing printed materials to life — from designing layouts and coordinating proofs to managing supplier timelines. I knew how to get a brochure made and delivered on time but while I became confident in the how of production, I realized I didn’t yet fully understand the why — the bigger picture of marketing, audience connection, and strategic messaging.

That gap in knowledge lingered in the back of my mind for years. It wasn’t until more recently that those questions really started to resonate with me — especially as I began dreaming about opening my own cat café. I realized that if I wanted my café to thrive, I’d need to learn how to market effectively: to understand why creating a brochure or campaign mattered and how to connect with the community in meaningful ways.

That realization led me to this internship at M3M Marketing — a pivotal step where I could finally bridge the gap between production and promotion. Over the past two months, I’ve learned how to think more strategically about messaging, target audiences, and creativity — skills I know will be invaluable when it’s time to market my café and beyond.

Marketing My Way Forward perfectly captures this slow and steady journey of growth — from taking over a family business to discovering the power of marketing as a tool for connection and impact. I actually first got to work with M3M Marketing while organizing the NWP Business Conference, where Mariah was one of our keynote speakers. That experience gave me an exciting early glimpse into the world of strategy, branding, and event marketing — and it made me want to learn more. This internship was the next step — and over the past two months, I’ve gained a much broader understanding of how thoughtful, intentional marketing helps a business truly connect and thrive. It’s transformed my practical knowledge of making materials into something deeper: the ability to think critically about how thoughtful, intentional marketing can help a business truly connect and thrive.

3 Lessons I’m Taking With Me

This internship didn’t just sharpen my marketing skills — it helped me step back and see how the work I’ve done for years fits into the bigger picture of business strategy and growth. For the first time, I’ve felt like all the pieces of my past experience, education, and future plans are starting to align. Here are three lessons I’ll be taking with me as I continue building toward my own small business dream.

#1 Communication is the Backbone of Every Office — and Every Brand

From coordinating with clients to maintaining internal documentation, this internship reaffirmed just how essential communication is in every corner of a workplace. I came to understand that communication isn’t just about writing emails — it’s about being intentional with tone, knowing how to navigate different audiences, and showing up with consistency and care. Whether I was crafting quick team updates or polishing content for a client, I learned to adjust my voice and approach accordingly. I became more confident handling professional communication, especially when juggling tight timelines or balancing multiple requests at once. More than anything, I saw how strong communication builds trust, reduces confusion, and creates an environment where collaboration can truly thrive.

Moving forward: I want to keep strengthening my professional communication by creating a personal style guide — something I can reference to stay consistent in tone, voice, and language across different platforms or client work. Whether I’m drafting emails, social posts, or internal updates, having that reference point will help me communicate with more clarity and purpose. It’s also something I can carry into future freelance work — whether in graphic design, marketing, or admin — to ensure I present myself (and my clients) in the most polished, professional way possible.

#2 Organization Isn’t Just About Schedules — It’s About Strategy

One of the biggest shifts for me during this internship was realizing that organization is about more than just staying tidy — it’s about building thoughtful systems that support productivity and creativity. I learned how to use timelines, shared tools, and status updates not just to keep things on track, but to actually create space for better work. Staying organized helped me become more adaptable when deadlines changed or priorities shifted, and it allowed me to stay focused even during the busiest weeks. With a clear structure in place, I found I could communicate more effectively, collaborate more easily, and produce high-quality results. Good organization, I’ve realized, isn’t just a personal strength — it’s a foundational strategy that shapes how teams function and succeed.

Moving forward: I’m going to set aside 10 minutes at the start and end of each workday to organize my tasks, check on project progress, and prep for what’s next. Creating that habit of daily check-ins will help me stay proactive, not reactive — and make it easier to adapt when things change (because they always do!).

#3 Small Details Make a Big Impact

Throughout my internship at M3M Marketing, I began to see just how powerful the smallest details can be — and how often they’re what separates “good enough” from truly polished work. Whether I was proofreading content, designing graphics, or preparing deliverables, I learned to approach every task with a critical eye and a steady sense of care. I started to pay closer attention to things like formatting consistency, visual alignment, and tone — those subtle touches that build professionalism and trust. I also came to really value the behind-the-scenes work that doesn’t always get noticed, but makes everything run more smoothly. There’s something really rewarding about knowing your effort made a process feel intentional and well-executed. That attention to detail has become a part of how I work — and something I’ll continue to take pride in moving forward.

Moving forward: I want to keep sharpening my eye for detail by building in a “final review buffer” into my workflow — even if it’s just five minutes to step back and look at something with fresh eyes. Making that time non-negotiable will help me maintain high standards and continue delivering work I feel proud to put my name on.
